Fun Facts: Hamilton just celebrated its 110th year of providing telecommunications services in 2011. Hamilton Telecommunications has been privately held by the Nelson family for 50 years, since 1961 when Earl Nelson and JP Dunlap purchased the remaining stock from the farmers cooperative. In 1967, Mid-State Community TV began offering cable television programming with five channels and a weather channel at a cost of $4.95/ month. In the late 1970’s, Hamilton installed its first digital data circuit connection with a speed of 300 bits per second (Bps). In 1995, Internet access was offered at a 14.4 Kbps dial-up speed through a T1 line to Lincoln, NE. Today, Hamilton offers residential DSL speeds as high as 15 million bits per second (mbps), which is 100,000 times as fast as the first data connection the company sold in the late 1970’s. Hamilton operates 5 relay centers nationwide and has contracted relay and/or captioned telephone services in 17 states, the Virgin Islands and the Island of Saipan.
